Cumbria Alexander Training

This is a full-time three year course for those wishing to become teachers of the F M Alexander Technique. The course is approved by the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT) and upon completion students receive a STAT certificate and are entitled to become Members of the Society.

Students on the course are externally moderated by an independent panel of senior Alexander teachers.

Course Content:

-Individual and Group Instruction in the Alexander Technique, practical hands-on classes, lectures in Anatomy.

-Positions of Mechanical Advantage, Body Mechanics and the relationship between Use and posture.

-The study of Alexander's books and related literature.

-Detailed explorations of the work are undertaken during second and third years in the form of weekly 'special sessions' , where two students work with one senior teacher for an hour. In addition, third year students work individually with the director and deputy on a weekly basis.

-Third year students undertake a programme of supervised teaching practice.

-Specialist tuition in the Use of the Voice.

-Specialist tuition in Movement.

The course is held at the Fellside Centre, in Kendal. Originally a Primary School, the building has been converted for use as an Alexander Teacher Training Centre. Facilities include two large carpeted rooms with mirrors and such equipment as is appropriate, a Movement Studio, Library, and a Music Room with piano. Alexander teachers have been trained at Fellside since 1986.

Each term 12 weeks
Three terms per year
